The Rules To Black Jack

You're going to Las Vegas so I assume you are going to want to be doing some gambling while you are there!

One of the most popular games to play is Black Jack. While like all of the other games at the Casino no matter how good you are you are still going to need luck to beat the house, you will have a better shot if you have a good understanding of the game and basic strategy.

The object of the game is to get as close as possible to 21 points without going over 21. (This is why the game is sometimes referred to as "21")

Each card is assigned a point value. The number cards are worth whatever number is on the card. The face cards are worth 10 points each. The tricky card is the Ace which can be worth either 11 points or 1 point depending on the situation. For example if you are dealt a King and an Ace then the Ace would be worth 11 points and you would have 21. But if you already have a King and a 4 and you call for another card then you get an Ace then you would count the Ace as only 1 point because otherwise you would be going over 21. The Ace's flexibility makes it the most powerful card in this game.

When you play Black Jack you are playing against the dealer. If there is more than one player at the table then each player is still playing against the dealer. For example the dealer can lose against one player while still beating the all the others at the table.

When a player busts he automatically loses even if the dealer busts too. This is why the "house" always has the advantage in Black Jack.

If a player and the dealer have the same total at the end of the hand then they "push" meaning that neither one wins.

Each Black Jack table in a Las Vegas casino will have a minimum bet rule. This is the least you can bet on a hand to play. The minimum bets will be posted at each table.

A player has the following options when playing Black Jack:

"Hit" - This means you want another card.
"Stand" - This means you do not want anymore cards.
"Double Down" - This means you will take exactly one more card and you'll double your bet.
"Split" - This is only available when both of your cards are the same. This means that you split your two cards into two new separate games. Each one will have the original bet on it so you will in effect be doubling your bet.

The dealer will "hit" until they have at least 17 regardless of what the players have. If the dealer busts then all of the remaining players will win (All of the players who have not busted.)

Well I hope this little lesson was of use to you. Remember that in Black Jack you are most likely going to lose! But if you have a good time and have some money you can afford to be without. Go for it!
